Folklore Museum of Palekastro
The first attempt of the establishment of a folklore museum in Palekastro has been started in 1987 by the two cultural unions of Palekastro “Eleia” and “Itanos” with the support of Toplou Monastery and the village Council.
In 1989 an old, dilapidated, traditional Cretan house was bought and immediately started its full renovation. In 1995 with the support of Sitia Development Organization the renovation was completed and right away started the collection of old things of everyday life from the greater province.
In 1997 it was opened for the visitors and since then it is open under the support of Itanos Municipality.
In the Museum a lot of things, utensils and tools used by older generations since the time of Turkish denomination to 1960. Some of them are unique items of the Cretan folkloric art.
Today the visitor can have a perfect view of an authentic Cretan home with all its furniture and utensils of the everyday life of the past.
It is worth to be visited as you can get acquainted with the older people of the area through its History and to come nearer to the way our ancestors used to live in everyday life.
This traditional Cretan house, which lodges the folklore museum of Palekastro is ideal for showing you the cretan life of yesterday.
